Welcome Back Karen and Chris!
We’re thrilled that Karen and Chris Romig are on the schedule this month! They are always extremely well-received when they perform on their own but this month they will be joined by guitar, string bass and drums. Their program will be made up of classical, sacred, jazz and Latin musical selections.
Chris Romig began his piano studies at the age of 7 after attending a concert by Liberace! He began playing frequently at church and became the church organist at age 14. During his undergraduate studies at the University of Maryland, Mr. Romig performed extensively at Washington, D.C. area, entertaining audiences with a variety of musical styles.
Currently, as the pastor at Venice Presbyterian Church, he brings an artist’s creativity to worship services, frequently offering meditative music during worship.
Karen Romig began her study of flute at age 8 and continued in high school and college. She graduated summa cum laude from Chapman University and has won numerous awards at competitions. She studied under Arthur Hoberman, flutist with the famed 20th-Century Fox Studio Orchestra. She is now with the Venice Symphony, the Venice Chamber Orchestra and the South Shore Symphony.
We encourage you to attend this evening’s concert! Arrive early for the best seats!

On August 20th we are going on another Ringling Bridge Walk. After the walk we are having breakfast/lunch at the new French restaurant Lolita Tartine in Sarasota. Read up on their delicious menu in the Communication Room. During the month of August, I will offer an open gym on Tuesday afternoons at 2 pm instead of the Aqua Fit in the pool. The sun is so intense by that time in the afternoon that it is healthier to work out indoors. Come to the Wellness Center and get directions on how to use the equipment correctly under my supervision.
Health Tip of the Month:
Herbal and other dietary supplements are not approved by the FDA and can cause serious side effects and interactions. Example: Glucosamine can cause elevated cholesterol or insulin resistance and raise blood sugar. (Essentials of Pharmacology, 2015. See Alternative Medicines) This book is available for reference only in our library.
We are planning another Trivial Pursuit game on August 30th, at 2:30 p.m., in the auditorium! We are randomly assigning teams like we did last time, so if you would like to be a participant, please sign up in the communication room so we know how many tables to set up. If you just want to be a spectator, no need to sign up. We are using the “vintage” edition of the game, so all the questions will be from the ’20s, ’30s, ’40s and ’50s. We will have prizes for our winners!
Day Trips and Travel
On Wednesday, August 24th we are headed to St. Petersburg for a tour of the historic Renaissance Vinoy hotel! This will be followed by lunch at Marchand’s, the upscale restaurant that overlooks Tampa Bay! On the way home we are going to stop for dessert and shopping at Mazzaro’s Italian Market! They have every imaginable Italian dessert in their bakery! Yum! Pick up a bottle or two of fabulous Italian wine to bring home and maybe some cheese to go with it from their cheese shop, as we will have a little time to shop.
Once the new dormitory and visitor’s center open, we will tour South Eastern Guide Dogs School again. They aren’t doing any tours due to the construction. They are supposed to finish by the end of the summer! Departure times and prices will be on your mailbox fliers!
Our next series from The Teaching Company is titled “CHURCHILL” and begins on August 2nd at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium and is 6 weeks long. Winston Churchill was the greatest leader of the 20th century. He is proof that single leaders can change the course of history. His courage, character and genius rallied the British people to “their finest hour.”
This course begins at the supreme moment in Churchill’s life, his address to Parliament on June 4, 1940, declaring to the world that Britain “shall never surrender.” Join us for our next class from Adult & Community Education! Bill Crowe is scheduled to teach another iPad class on Friday mornings beginning on September 30th. This is a four week class. The first class is for beginners. Bill will have 10 iPads with him each week, so signing up quickly if you want to join in is important! The second class will be a class on iPad “Apps”. If you own an iPad and would like to sit in on either class, that is fine. The folks on the list in the communication room are the students who will have use of the iPads. The time will be on your mailbox flier.
Upcoming Season Theater Trips!
Some great shows are coming to the Straz Center in Tampa this winter! We’ve got reservations for “An American in Paris”, a matinee this time, on Wednesday, December 21st followed by dinner at Bern’s Steakhouse! On Saturday, January 28th we’re headed to the revival of Cabaret, which won a Tony in 2014, for “Best Revival of a musical.” We’ll head to “Eddie’s Prime Seafood” for dinner following the show.
We are headed to the wonderful Broadway Palm Dinner Theater for three shows this year. Join us for “EVITA” on Thursday, November 10th; “White Christmas” on Tuesday, December 20th and “Jesus Christ Superstar” on Thursday, May 4th. Departure times and prices will be on the flier you receive in your mailbox! We are really looking forward to another great theater season here in Southwest Florida!
Olympic Dreams in Rio
From Aug. 5 through Aug. 21, more than 10,000 athletes will gather in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to compete in the 2016 Summer Olympics, formally known as the Games of the XXXI Olympiad. These are the first Olympic Games to be held in South America.
Events will take place in four zones across Rio: Barra, Copacabana, Deodoro and Maracanã. Barra will be the site of the largest number of events, including golf, which has been added as an Olympic sport after being absent from the games for 112 years.
Another new event this year is rugby sevens, a 15-minute version of rugby with teams of seven. Rugby was last played at the Olympics in 1924, and the U.S. won the gold medal in the 15-player variant of the game.
At the last Summer Olympics, the U.S. won the most medals. In Rio, they will compete against 205 other countries in 306 medal events. With 42 different sports, ranging from archery to gymnastics to volleyball, this year’s games are sure to provide plenty of opportunities for victory, as well as exciting entertainment for spectators and viewers around the world.
The 2016 Summer Olympics run Aug. 5 through Aug. 21
