Duo Lana Returns!
Schubert’s Ave Maria inspired a lifelong collaboration between Milana and her mother, Svetlana. When Milana was 11 years old and Svetlana’s pianist got sick,
Milana stepped up to play the piece with her at a gala concert. The mother/daughter duo clicked! Milana, at the age of 14, when Svetlana was preparing for the role of Kostanze from Mozart’s “Die Entfuhrung aus dem Serail,” went along on her tour and helped. This is the early story of the Strezeva duo, which has performed around the world. They are ardent promoters of the Russian Vocal Literature in this country, which they moved to in 1994.
Svetlana Strezeva, a prominent Russian-American soprano, completed her studies in Milan, Italy at La Scala. She has been the recipient of many international awards. Milana Strezeva received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at The Juilliard School under a full scholarship. She is the winner of countless prominent prizes and awards in piano.
The concert will take place on Thursday, August 10th, at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium. website: www.strezeva.com.

By Petra Mueller
During August the schedule will change to accommodate the substitute instructors for Petra’s vacation.
So please check the schedule carefully and pay attention to those changes. Marian Vento is back to teach Strength Classes and Balance & Posture Classes three times a week. Julie Shaussney is here twice a week to teach Splash Class in the pool.
Please be sure to come and attend the classes offered, in order to stay in tip-top shape for the next 2 weeks, so you are ready for all the activities coming up in September!
Indoor walking is very popular during the summer days and the hallways come in handy. Early in the morning the pool is nice and shaded—a lot of residents come down early to take advantage of that.
News In August, we continue our summer of Rick Burns’ documentaries about New York.
A reminder that the DVDs are a bit longer than our usual one-hour class, between 100-120 minutes.
As you are probably aware, there is going to be a rare event in our solar system on Monday, August 21st. All of North America will be treated to one of nature’s most awe-inspiring sights (one that only happens every 99 years), a total eclipse of the sun. This path, where the moon will completely cover the sun, will stretch from Charleston, South Carolina, to Salem, Oregon! You’ll certainly be able to view it from Florida, too.
We are pleased to report that we have a very special trip planned! No, we’re not going to Kansas where the sun will be completely covered, as it takes too long to get there on the Bay Village bus. Instead, we have partnered with the astronomers at The South Florida Museum in Bradenton. We have all three buses reserved, so we can take up to 52 people. You will have a private show in the Planetarium there with astronomer Howard Hochhalter. Howard will discuss the eclipse and also other events that are going on in the solar system. Of course, bring your questions! Following the Planetarium Show, we have a private room at the NEW MATTISON’S CITY GRILL, which is near the museum in downtown Bradenton. Mattison’s is doing their “Savor Sarasota” special menu for our group, so you’ll choose what you will have for dinner ahead of time. This wonderful opportunity takes place on Tuesday, August 15th, if you’d like to go! The bus departs at 3:15 p.m.
Day Trips and Travels!
We’ve suspended our walks over the Ringling Bridge for the next two months. It’s just too hot!
You already read about our fantastic opportunity to learn more about the upcoming eclipse at Bishop Planetarium at South Florida Museum on August 15th (see page 6 if you missed it).
On Thursday, August 17th, we will depart Bay Village at 4:30 p.m. for the next play we will see during their “Dog Days of Summer” series at the Asolo Repertory Theater. The play is “Double Indemnity” and the full description will be on the flier you receive in your mailbox, but let’s just say it’s a steamy tale of love and murder! Prior to the show, we’ll enjoy dinner at Louies Modern restaurant. The eclectic menu is served in a beautifully decorated spot downtown with a show kitchen. We’re also dining out at another Bay Village favorite, Harry’s Continental Kitchen on Longboat Key on Tuesday, August 22nd! Departs at 4:30 p.m. NOTE: Both “Harry’s” & “Louies” are continuing their “Savor Sarasota” Prix Fixe menu! Three courses for $32 or feel free to order off the regular menu as well!
Have fun, everyone!
